ABSTRACT

This research study provides a case study of how the COVID-19 pandemic affected Japanese university students' views and attitudes on international topics and motivations for living and working abroad. During the pandemic, digital information, including social media, played a promi-nent role in how these students interacted and kept up with the news. We surveyed 204 students at a private university in Tokyo to help under-stand how the landscape of internationalization changed during the unique circumstances brought about by the pandemic. © 2023 James Nicholas Publishers.

ABSTRACT

Some people have forgotten the recent COVID-19 pandemic, but for many, the memories are still vivid in terms of the effects of the health crisis on society. Globally, almost all parts of the world had significant changes made to their way of life due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which included social and economic effects. Many countries closed their international borders for a long period of time, which had a profound influence on the degree of internationalization occurring within these regions. Owing to the need for social distancing, there were rapid changes to digital business practices and the resulting increased usage of online communication platforms. The aim of this editorial is to highlight how global entrepreneurship research and practice in the post-COVID-19 world have changed in terms of research and practitioner practices. This is important as we seek to progress society through positive interaction in the business environment. Suggestions for future managerial and academic practices regarding global entrepreneurship are stated. © 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

ABSTRACT

As a response to the impact of economic globalization on academia, internationalization of higher education has gained momentum in the past few decades. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, seems to have posed an unprecedented challenge to it. Governments have restricted mobility across borders as a measure to curb the spread of the virus, making it less appealing, if not impossible, for students to venture into studying abroad. Against this backdrop, this chapter introduces and explores a way out of this impasse. It questions the validity of dividing internationalization efforts into the two categories of "abroad and at home" and introduces emerging categories. Such categories primarily rely on the use of information and communication technology tools to enable students to pursue international education despite the current global health concerns. It also discusses how collaborative online international learning, as an approach to virtual mobility, can be a solution for internationalization of higher education during a global crisis and beyond. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021. ABSTRACT

With the changes in consumer profile, especially in tourism activity, facing the issues brought by globalization, greater access to and use of Technologies, and more recently, the restrictions imposed by the protocols to prevent contamination by the Covid-19 virus and its consequences, it has been necessary to change the way of experiencing tourism, leading the market to adapt to the new reality. Thus, the incentive to implement so-called Proximity Tourism has gathered strength, prompting the following research question: how has this type of tourism been addressed and how have the cities of the Brazilian Northeast have been working with this theme to promote their potential on the social network platform Instagram? The main objective of this study was to perform an observational analysis of what is being posted on this social network concerning proximity tourism, by investigating the use of the hashtag #turismodeproximity, and whether the cities of the Northeast of Brazil are using this Instagram tool. As the result of this research, it was found that of the total posts indexed with this hashtag, only a small number are directly related to this region, indicating a lack of dissemination, and consequently, failure to generate greater visibility for this tourism modality.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the new directions towards internationalization of higher education in China during post-COVID 19. The systematic literature review is applied as an evidence-based policy analysis approach. The findings indicate that the challenges and difficulties of internationalization of higher education in the post-COVID 19 were considered as a high-frequency discussion topic. In order to address the crises of internationalization of higher education during the post-COVID 19, the idea of internationalization at home (IaH) is regarded as a beneficial approach to deal with the process of internationalization of higher education, systematically. This study also highlighted that the internationalization at home within Chinese higher education institutions not only brings opportunities for the development of China's higher education system, but also poses challenges to the reform of the current higher education system. In addition, the conclusion and implication were provided to analyze the rationales of promoting internationalization of higher education system in contemporary China.

ABSTRACT

With the rapid development of the massification of higher education, the growth of international mobility plays an important role in shaping the internationalization of higher education and increasing international student numbers. However, the impact of COVID-19 has significantly influenced international mobility, including student, academic staff, and program mobility, and in response the model is being shifted from physical to online education. Furthermore, the unavoidable changes provide an alternative for international students, which allows them to cope with the mobility crisis. In other words, virtual mobility or internationalization at home creates new forms of internationalization in higher education. Numerous articles discuss student mobility before the COVID-19 pandemic, and several studies reveal the motivation behind student mobility under the pandemic. However, fewer scholars pay attention to the effect of virtual mobility. Therefore, based on a literature review and second-hand survey data, this chapter analyses the impact of COVID-19 on the internationalization of higher education in the past two years, new forms of international mobility, and the perspective from both students and staff. In addition, this chapter further provides recommendations for the future development of the internationalization of higher education, especially with the new normal. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, obstacles to physical mobility, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, have hastened the turn towards online platforms for educational and social activities. Many study abroad programs have had to adapt to such circumstances and embrace virtual environments in the face of limited physical mobility. In this case study, we look at how one multi-university program, the UGPN Academy, was able to expand international student learning efforts despite travel limitations due, in part, to adapting to online communication technologies and environments. Through comparison of surveys administered to participants pre-and post-participation, students reported that having an online community as a source of social support, as well as learning about different experiences during a global pandemic, were two strengths of the program. In addition, students reported becoming more familiar with different online technologies as well as feeling more open to people from diverse backgrounds and international careers. These findings contribute to a further understanding of Internationalisation at Home (IaH) as a useful model that can be extremely valuable in its own right. Although IaH is not a replacement for physical mobility, it may provide its own benefits, such as providing a collaborative, diverse online community as a source of social and professional support, networking and opportunities for international learning experiences for students who are unable to participate in traditional study abroad programs. Diversifying and further integrating such virtual platforms can then be seen as a part of best practices rather than a replacement for traditional modes of international cultural exchange.

ABSTRACT

On 24th March 2020, in a televised interview, Brazilian President Jaír Bolsonaro notoriously dismissed the symptoms of the COVID-19 virus as a ‘gripezinha', which can be translated into English as a ‘mild dose of the flu.' While his characterization of the illness was consistent with the Brazilian leader's other pronouncements about the virus and with his claims that he and his compatriots would be relatively immune to its impact, it was this expression, repeated endlessly, that came to symbolize the laissez-faire attitude of the leadership to the crisis. By November 2020, COVID-19 had resulted in over 150, 000 deaths in the country, and Brazil was third only to the USA and India in virus-related fatalities. The pandemic also arrived in Brazil at a time of defunding of public universities generally, and governmental hostility towards the humanities and social sciences in particular. This chapter considers ways in which the humanities and social sciences in Brazil might respond to the constraints imposed by the pandemic by drawing on the tradition of critical discourse analysis and the more recent innovations of the digital and medical humanities. The chapter also considers the likely impact of the economic and health crisis on Brazilian public universities' plans for internationalization. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2021.

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates the impact of digital transformation on export reduction during COVID-19 by using unique data from Vietnamese manufacturing firms. Digital transformation reflects whether firms had already introduced digital technology before the COVID-19 outbreak or started using digital technology during the COVID-19 outbreak. Meanwhile, an export reduction is a partial de-internationalization in which firms decrease overseas sales. Estimation results from the instrumental variable probit method show that digital transformation has a negative effect on the probability of export reduction. This effect becomes particularly strong for micro, small and medium enterprises. Our findings have managerial implications for firm managers. © 2023 The Author(s). ABSTRACT

Aimed at faculty and administrators, this chapter describes viable and accessible virtual strategic initiatives that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) can adopt to advance internationalization in general, and global learning in particular. It frames these opportunities in terms of the circumstances precipitated by the coronavirus pandemic. By citing current virtual projects on college and university campuses, it demonstrates that HBCUs can exploit the greater credibility and visibility that virtual learning has recently acquired to launch affordable global learning opportunities for their students that can help prepare them to be globally competent and that can last well beyond the end of the pandemic. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has undoubtedly affected some trends in an irreversible way but will probably not impact significantly on certain aspects of cross-border higher education. Old and new challenges are reshaping the concept of international education, posing particular stress on the social dimension of the learning experience. This chapter uses the case of 'ESCP Business School', a truly international business school, headquartered in Paris, with seven campuses across six different European cities. The analysis of the multi-campus model of ESCP, as well as its innovative and unique pedagogical model with a specific focus on its approach during and immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic, could suggest potential paths to enhance student learning, and intercultural and social experience in a hybrid pedagogical setting for the next-normal. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

The changes in the fields of education, business administration, transportation, science and technology innovation, logistics and supply chain management, etc. caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the post-epidemic era are reviewed in this paper, with research topics such as China's management of medical and health institutions, public health emergency governance, community governance, and national governance being emphasized. The "resilient governance" which is more flexible and resilient has become the common choice both at the national governance level under the background of globalizaiton and at the emergency of public health governance level which pays more attention on the community governance. At the same time, building an institutional coordination and collaboration mechanism that is more adaptable to the post-epidemic era is also a major challenge to future governance. Based on the above analysis, this paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the vague definition of the concept of "post-epidemic era", and discusses the current problems of inadequate use of research methods, inadequate research design, and separation of theoretical and practical values of the research. Finally, from the perspective of restructuring, the future governance concepts and governance models in the post-epidemic era are prospected.

ABSTRACT

The intensification of globalization processes and the dynamic development of world economic relations actualize the problem of studying the tourism industry as a strategic and priority vector of economic recovery and development. It has experienced the destabilizing impact of crises. The outlined trends give importance to the issue of studying the peculiarities of the functioning of the tourism industry as a stimulant for the growth of economic development of the state in the context of modern challenges, dangers, and the increasing impact of crises. The article aims to study the theoretical and applied principles of functioning and development of the tourism industry as a driver of the economic development of the state and identify its problems in crises. The methodological basis of the study is based on the use of general scientific and unique methods of scientific knowledge and economic analysis, namely: system and statistical analysis, synthesis, scientific ion, comparison, analogy, grouping, cluster analysis, graphical, tabular, generalization, and systematization. The results of the conducted research give grounds to assert that the development of the tourism industry as a driver of economic development of the state in crises is influenced by negative factors of the external and internal environment. It has been established that the most significant crises that have significantly destabilized the tourism industry and the economic development of European countries are the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian war. The main problems of the functioning and development of the tourism industry in the current crisis conditions have been identified, in particular: logistical problems;environmental and sanitary-epidemiological problems;problems of non-transparency of economic activity in the tourism sector;increased socio-political instability;lack of strategic development programs and state support for the tourism industry;low level of innovation development and information support. The necessity of forming a mechanism of anti-crisis marketing based on innovations has been proposed. It will help improve the tourism industry's development and economic growth.

ABSTRACT

In 2021, the number of children who required PC for STH decreased for pre-SAC from 291.2 million to 260.6 million and for SAC from 732.3 million to 653.7 million (Figure 2). This change was mainly due to revision of the numbers of children who require PC for STH in India, which decreased from 103.5 to 80.7 million for pre-SAC and from 332.1 to 259.1 million for SAC. The decreases were based on impact assessment surveys conducted in the past few years, which changed the endemicity status of some districts. Globally, PC coverage of SAC increased from 47% in 2020 to 62.9% in 2021.The number of SAC reached with deworming increased almost to that before the COVID-19 pandemic (411 million in 2021, 344 million in 2020, 455.9 million in 2019), indicating that countries are recovering.

ABSTRACT

The tourism sector has played an important role in the development of the world economy, mobility and globalization. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the sector needed to implement urgent measures and adaptations. This article aimed to identify which are the environmentally sustainable practices developed by a tourist enterprise of a rural property located in the municipality of Garibaldi-RS. In methodological terms, a single-type case study strategy was used with an exploratory and descriptive approach, operationalized with qualitative and quantitative research techniques. As data collection instruments, online interviews were used with the owner of the enterprise, respecting the recommendations of social isolation. The answers were recorded, tabulated and analyzed using the content analysis technique. Numerical data were tabulated using Excel software. The family responsible for the production unit, Familia Boroto, is fully dedicated to the organic production. The owner expressed concern about environmental sustainability and in this sense reported that the enterprise develops environmentally sustainable practices and, among them, they use solid waste management and recycling and he added that the health crisis brought a drop in revenue and little demand for organic products. In response, the producer made changes in management practices, such as process readaptation, innovation and entry into new markets. Thus, it was concluded that, even in the pandemic period, the venture had positive points and environmentally sustainable practices emerge as an opportunity to value products and services.

ABSTRACT

As China's position in the global economy has gradually improved, the importance of debates on the role of the renminbi in the international monetary system has significantly increased. This paper uses bibliometric methods—Bibliometrix R-package and its web-based graphical interface Biblioshiny—applied to data imported from Web of Science and Scopus to investigate and synthesize the renminbi literature published in English between 1995 and 2021. Science mapping offers a visual representation of different networks and clusters of authors' keywords. The performance analysis, a quantitative evaluation of the most published sources, authors and papers on renminbi internationalization in the last 25 years, shows that the interest on the topic has grown, particularly after 2009 and 2016, respectively. There is also a high degree of concentration in the field, considering that out of the 802 analyzed papers, published in 393 sources, five authors and four journals had the highest impact. The content analysis identifies the main directions in the renminbi internationalization literature and future research questions to further explore this subject. The COVID-19 pandemic and post-Ukraine war era could generate a deeper reform of the international monetary system, in which the Chinese currency will strengthen its global position alongside the US dollar and the euro. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

The global knowledge economy has turned higher education into a key player in societal development. Internationalization benefits higher education institutions in several aspects, such as improvement and visibility in international rankings, revenue generation via tuition fees and external funding, improvement of research and teaching quality, integration with academic communities and familiarization with scholarly attitudes. In this study, we provide insights into the challenges of internationalization faced by higher education institutions in Iran as a developing country. Several policies and practices have been adopted in Iran to improve internationalization efforts;however, these activities have had little impact on the quality of research and educational programs at Iran's universities. Understanding the challenges they face in a systematic way can help identify different factors and develop a set of suggestions to increase the quality and quantity of international cooperation. We formulate our suggestions based on the opportunities provided by the digitalization solutions in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing importance of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals in both global and national environments. We interviewed 15 faculty members in Iranian higher education institutions and 14 managers in charge of international affairs at universities in Iran. In addition, data extracted from three forums on Iranian higher education internationalization are analysed. Using a grounded theory approach, we group the challenges into macro-, institutional and individual levels and then suggest a number of practices and policies to increase the quantity and quality of internationalization efforts. © 2023 The Authors. ABSTRACT

During the post COVID 19, internationalization at home (IaH) is gradually becoming a hot topic worldwide, which is an increasing learning field of pedagogical practice. Aiming at obtaining an in-depth understanding of the epistemology of internationalization at home, this study applies the scoping review analysis led by the research questions: what is acknowledged from the current literature review about the theories and practices of internationalization at home (IaH) contextually? What are the problems, characteristics, and implications of internationalization at home (IaH)? This study explores 22 studies with two third published in the last ten years. This result indicates that the core epistemological idea of internationalization at home (IaH) is identified and analyzed from multiple perspectives. It involves different stakeholders in the field of internationalization of higher education, such as students, faculty members, administrators, and policy makers. Creating international curriculum/courses serve as the goal for advocating internationalization at home (IaH). In addition, advocating internationalization at home still encounters a plenty of problems, such as the limited educational resources and financial support and proficiency of foreign language. Moreover, the conclusion and remarks have been offered in the last.
